Fortnite has no username system of its own. The name over your head in the lobby is your Epic Games display name, and it lives on the Epic account page — not anywhere in the game's settings. That one fact explains nearly every quirk worth knowing here: the 3–16 character cap, the two-week rename cooldown, and the strange way a name can pass Epic's form and still show up in a match as a row of empty boxes.

Epic accepts more than Fortnite can draw

Epic's account form is fairly relaxed about Unicode. Fortnite's interface font — the chunky condensed face called Burbank — is not. It covers plain letters and digits plus a range of Japanese and Chinese glyphs, which is why the decorations you actually see on other players tend to come from the same short list: ツ シ ジ 彡 乂 亗 气 and the corner brackets 「」. Ornate alphabets like script (𝓡𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓷) or double-struck (ℝ𝕒𝕧𝕖𝕟) often sit outside the game font, and emoji aren't drawn at all. Anything Burbank can't render appears as a blank box (▯) in the lobby roster, the elimination feed, and on the screen of whoever you just knocked — the worst possible place to look broken.

Styling "Raven" without boxing out

A heavily framed version like ꧁༒☬ℝ𝕒𝕧𝕖𝕟☬༒꧂ is 11 visible characters, so it clears the length check, and the account form may even take it. In a match, though, every one of those ornaments is a gamble, and if they fail you're stuck as a wall of ▯ until your next rename window. The version that actually works is ツRavenツ or 乂RAVEN乂: seven characters, crisp in the elim feed, and ツ carries its own reputation in Fortnite — it's the classic sweat signature, worn by people who crank 90s on players still holding a grey pump. The heavier frames aren't useless, they just belong elsewhere: Discord servers, clan applications, and social bios about the game handle them fine.

The two-week commitment

Epic lets you change the display name once, then locks it for two weeks, and there's no in-game preview to test against first. The change happens on the Epic Games website, under account settings in the General tab — the Fortnite client itself has no rename option, so don't burn time hunting its menus for one. And the stakes are wider than one game: the display name belongs to your Epic account, so whatever you pick is also what Rocket League and Fall Guys will print in their own interface fonts. Test the exact spelling in the compatibility checker before the lock starts, and favor symbols you've personally seen rendering on other players in your lobbies.

One quiet upside of the strict system: display names are unique across all of Epic, and short English words were claimed long ago. Symbols change the string — plain Raven is almost certainly gone, but ツRavenツ is a different name entirely, and it may still be free.

Why console lobbies never show your Epic name

On PlayStation and Xbox, Fortnite shows the platform name — the PSN online ID or the Xbox gamertag — rather than the Epic display name. Neither accepts decorative Unicode (PSN IDs are limited to letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, and gamertags aren't much looser), which is why every full lobby is a mix of decorated names and stubbornly ordinary ones. If you main console and still want the styled identity, put it where it can live: your Discord nickname, your stream panels, your bio. Plenty of cross-platform players resolve this with a two-tier identity: a plain, console-legal handle bound to their PSN or Xbox account, and a decorated one reserved for games whose account systems allow it. Free Fire belongs firmly to that second tier — it accepts the ꧁༒☬ treatment Fortnite shrugs off — and the gaming names collection carries options for either tier.
